PRS: New Music 20x12 deadline: 1 October 2010

New Music 20x12

deadline: 1 October 2010

The PRS for Music Foundation (PRSF) has launched its new Cultural Olympiad music programme, New Music 20x12.

New Music 20x12 will support 20 12-minute, specially-commissioned works of music to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The selected works will premiere in 2012 and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Winning composers and musicians will also benefit from networking and professional development opportunities.

A panel of experts, chaired by Roger Wright – Controller BBC Radio 3 and Director of the BBC Proms – will be announced later this year. Music organisations, festivals, ensembles, promoters and venues from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are invited to submit ideas for new work, in any musical genre, that they would like to commission from a UK-based composer by Friday 1 October 2010.

For information on New Music 20x12 and how to apply visit www.prsformusicfoundation.com/newmusic20x12.

Myth, Science, Nature, Life

Throughout August and September
The Library, The Open University, Walton Hall, Milton Keynes, MK7 6AA
(Open 8.30am-6.30pm Monday-Thursday, 8.30am-5pm Fridays. Visitors to the University will need to sign in at the library reception)

“My work explores the use of line and space to describe nature and the body – combining
my interest in drawing, and how line can depict form, with the spatial presence and materiality
of sculpture.

I am inspired by the connections and dichotomies between our contemporary understanding of the world through science (particularly physics and quantum physics), and how our ancestors related to the world through narrative, ritual and the creation of mythologies.

What is perception? What is reality?”

Linda Johns

Exhibited works:

Iris II - stainless steel and copper wire
Forest IV - line drawing
Forest III - line drawing
Forest II - line drawing
Forest I - line drawing

Linda will give a talk about her art practice in the Library Presentation Room, 9th September, 12.30-1.30pm (Free, all welcome)

Linda also runs drawing and sculpture workshops - see http://www.lindajohns.com/workshops.htm for details.

Have You Seen This Pigeon Exhibition in Midsummer Place!

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS PIGEON?

A project by Isabella Niven with people from Milton Keynes

The show is now up and open to the public, viewbale 24 hours a day in Midsummer Place at the FringeMK Project Space 1.

Thank you to everyone who got their contribution to me in time for Saturday's installation.

If you didn't manage to send me yours in time, I will be adding to the current contributions at the begining of September before the private view on Tuesday 14th at 6pm, so do email any images you would like to be included.

View more information here: http://www.haveyouseenthispigeon.co.uk/news.html

The project was made possible by the generous support of Arts Gateway MK.

BACKGROUND:

This year Milton Keynes will be 43 years old. The new town, built around a network of rural villages and small towns in far north east Buckinghamshire has been continually expanding since the foundation stone was laid in 1967. The carefully planned grid of roads creates a structure for a continually evolving living city which is now finding room for a more organic growth to compliment the long established structure for development. It is an exciting time for the city which is arguably the most successful of the post war new towns.

This project has paired residents with hand made porcelain 'homing' pigeons. The participants become the keepers in return for a photograph of the bird in a place that holds some kind of significance to the new owner, within the landscape of Milton Keynes. A visual record is then built of the city as it is lived in by the community in its 44th year.

The results are recorded on this website and will be displayed in an exhibition at Project Space 1, Midsummer Place, Central Milton Keynes between 9th August and 30th Septmeber 2010.

This project has been put together by Isabella Niven, a member of Milton Keynes artist collective Sitting Ducks. She grew up in Milton Keynes before studying ceramics in Cornwall and South Australia.  She returned in 2006 to work at the Milton Keynes Gallery where she met the collectives' fellow founding members. The group exhibit nationally and more information can be found on their website.

Beth Nielsen Chapman

Supported by Martha Tilston

The Stables, Sunday 19 September 8pm

Tickets £27.50

Beth joins us touring her new CD, Back To Love, which brings the acclaimed singer/songwriter back to the soul-deep songwriting style that made her famous. And while the soaring melodies, bell-clear vocals and heart-penetrating lyrics are firmly in place, there's a new depth reflecting every turn in the tragic-and-triumphant road she has travelled. This new release represents an exuberant return to the style that distinguished some of her best work and biggest hits, and a bright new chapter in her songbook of life's revelations.
