Vagabond Cinema announces 2010-2011 programme

ICMK (Independent Cinema MK) has announced that it's touring film programme, The Vagabond Cinema, will be bringing something exciting to a venue near you. Vagabond Cinema is dedicated to bringing MK the best of all types of film: all-ages matinees, arthouse, classic Hollywood, experimental work, and ventures by local film-makers. We bring exciting films to local venues  all around the city

The September - February programme will be touring MK with over twenty events, promising something for everyone. Highlights include Halloween spectacular "An American Werewolf in London" at the City Discovery Centre on October 29th; our now legendary Christmas event at St George's Church, Wolverton, which this year will feature "Monsieur Hulot's Holiday" on December 18th - and football-fantasy "The Damned United", showing on January 14th at the MK Dons Stadium.

�Helter Skelter Runway� selected for John Moores Painting Prize

A painting by Milton Keynes based artist Annabelle Shelton,  ‘Helter Skelter Runway’,  has been shortlisted for one of the UK’s most prestigious painting prizes:  the John Moores Painting Prize 2010.  Annabelle Shelton is one of 45 artists whose work has been selected from nearly 3000 entries, to be exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool from 18 September to 3 January 2010/11 and to compete for five prizes including the First Prize of £25,000.

 Working directly onto sprayed white aluminium in watercolour pencil and paint,  Annabelle focuses on quasi-theme parks and beach scenes, animating small details; leaving large areas of white, suggestive of resting space amongst the clutter of modern life. 

Represented by the Rarity Gallery in Mykonos, Greece and formerly represented by Jill George and RHG in London, Annabelle is delighted that she has been selected for this show. She has just completed an Artists’ Residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre at the end of August 2010.

The aims of the Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation are broad, although particular emphasis is placed on causes that support the following areas:

the care, welfare and support of children (including education);

the promotion of health, welfare and the advancement of medical services;

the relief of poverty, indigence and distress;

the care, welfare and support of the aged, infirm, handicapped and disabled; and

· the support of the arts.

CALL TO ARTISTS WORKING IN NEW MEDIA

OVADA exists to facilitate and promote access to high quality visual arts for all the residents of and visitors to Oxfordshire. The organisation has recently vacated its Gallery in Gloucester Green to allow for the redevelopment of the Old Fire Station building. During the interim period whilst OVADA does not have a permanent exhibition space we are excited to introduce a programme of site-specific projects and events across the County.
 
OVADA is proud to be part of this year's Christmas Light Night when cultural venues across Oxfordshire welcome thousands of visitors during a special late night opening. On Friday 26 November 2010 OVADA will take over one of the City's most attractive and historic buildings, Oxford Town Hall, for one night only.

OVADA is looking for a maximum of 10 artists working in the South East region to use this unique opportunity to show and/or produce new work that responds to the physical space or the history of Oxford Town Hall. Work will be showcased in over 10 intriguing spaces including the Judges Room, Court Room, Old Library and former Cells - all situated in the beautiful Grade II listed building at the heart of the historic City of Oxford. Work in any new medium will be considered including film, video, sound, light, installation, performance and live work. Proposals from collaborations are also welcome. Work should provide the audience with an extraordinary experience as they explore the building and see the Town Hall's heritage in a new light. Due to the site-specific nature of this project we highly recommend viewing the spaces available to artists before submitting a proposal. For a chance to discuss the opportunity and take a guided tour of the building please meet promptly at the Town Hall Reception on one of the dates below. We regret that we cannot arrange visits during any other times.

Interested artists should submit the following:

* a copy of their CV
* an Artist Statement
* Documentation of previous relevant work in the form of printouts or CD (maximum of 10 images and DVDs should comprise of a shorter edit of any work longer than 10 minutes). Please do not send original work.
* a proposal no longer than 1 A4 sheet outlining the work that you would like to produce or appropriate existing work that you wish to exhibit on 26 November 2010. All work must somehow respond to Oxford Town Hall.
Please include a stamped addressed envelope if you wish for your application to be returned.
 
Artists will be chosen from open submission by an experienced panel of selectors and will be notified by Friday 8 October 2010.
 
Artists are ultimately responsible for covering all costs incurred however OVADA may be able to contribute a limited amount towards travel and materials and will confirm this with successful applicants. Depending on the nature of the work most artists will be required to be at the Town Hall for the entire day of Friday 26 November to assist installing and taking down their work. OVADA is able to offer a limited selection of AV equipment but it is preferred that artists provide their own.

Sir Terry Pratchett and Transworld Publishers have launched a new award for aspiring debut novelists, The Terry Pratchett ‘Anywhere But Here, Anywhen But Now Prize’. Transworld will offer the winning author a publishing contract with a £20,000 advance.

The award will be judged by Sir Terry Pratchett, Tony Robinson, Michael Rowley from Waterstone’s and two senior members of the editorial team at Transworld Publishers.

Youth Music is the UK's largest children's music charity. Through its Open Programme, grants of between £5,000 and £30,000 are available to support projects that provide music-making activities for children and young people in support of Youth Music's goals.

Youth Music will fund any non-profit-making organisation more than one year old, that is committed to music-making activities for children and young people up to 18 (or up to 25 if they have special educational needs, disabilities or are in detention).

Eclectic Arts Market is back!!!

The Eclectic Arts Market is back and this time we are inviting all interested artists, makers and designers to contact us to register interest in taking part in a night market.  We have been in talks and have been offered a space in Queen's Square, now Destination Dining, smack bang in the middle of the shopping centre.  You will need to provide your own gazebo, which will need to be uniform.  This is a very exciting opportunity to get your work out in a new and bustling area of thecentre mk.  We are looking at the first or second week of October.

BFFS responds to closure of the UK Film Council

In response to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport's (DCMS) announced abolition of the UK Film Council, the British Federation of Film Societies (BFFS – Cinema for All) has made the following public statement:

“For over 60 years, BFFS has supported volunteer-led, grass-roots film clubs and community cinemas in the exhibition of films to both urban and rural audiences across the UK. Contrary to any claim of 'elitism', film societies open their doors to the public, screen a wide range of accessible titles and truly enable ‘Cinema for All’.

“In 2008-09, 44 per cent of film societies operated in rural areas (compared with 3 per cent of commercial screens). Over 25 per cent of films screened by film societies in the same period were British, and 49 per cent were in a foreign language (compared with 21 per cent and 36 per cent by commercial screens).

“Should the closure of the UK Film Council proceed as planned, the UK will lose a vital overview body and co-ordinator of funding to UK’s exhibition, distribution and production sectors. This could threaten the existence of the BFFS-supported network that enables audiences across the UK to be inspired, educated and entertained by both British and world cinema.

“For the past decade, the UK Film Council has been BFFS’s core funder. Community cinema and film society numbers, viewing attendances and BFFS national survey returns are currently all at record highs.

“BFFS urges DCMS to publicly commit to safeguarding the investment in film exhibition, such as the support provided by BFFS to film societies and community cinemas. Whilst this may be less glamorous than the UK Film Council’s film production remit, it is the vital component that completes the circle, adding value to communities and to the educational and cultural sectors by enabling films to be seen and appreciated by audiences across the UK.”

Over the next few weeks members of the public have the chance to pick the winner of a region-wide X Factor-style search for fresh visual arts talent. ginny gray gallery, the contemporary art and crafts gallery based in Bridge Street, Buckingham, is staging its Art Idol Finalists Exhibition from Friday August 20^th until Saturday September 11^th.

The free-to-enter talent search – open to artists aged 16 –25 from across the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire (BON) region – drew many entries from fresh-faced artistic hopefuls using varying techniques and working in a wide range of styles.

An expert judging panel then had the difficult job of whittling down the many excellent entries to a three-strong shortlist.

The three finalists are Mirren Kessling, Julia Darze and Abii Smith. Now it is up to the general public to choose the overall winner. Visitors to the gallery during the exhibition will be given ballot papers and encouraged to vote for their favourite young artist. 

“Asking the public to vote is a great way of getting people excited about a new generation of artists who deserve recognition for their creative skills and dedication,” says ginny gray gallery co-owner Rob Gray. “We were bowled over by the number and standard of entries we received. Mirren, Julia and Abii beat off some stiff competition and have done exceptionally well to make the final. We hope lots of people will come and enjoy their work. They may well be voting for a future star of the art world. Good luck to all three of them.“

ginny gray gallery represents a wide range of painters, printmakers and 3D artists, including sculptor Adam Binder who in May 2010 picked up the coveted national Wildlife Artist of the Year award in London.

Transitions, a selected themed exhibition, 18 - 19 September: Artists are invited to submit up to 3 pieces of artwork for this exhibition, to be held in The Crown Hotel, Brackley, Northants.

The theme is Transitions - moving from one state to another: seasonal, personal, physical or spiritual.

Work can be in any medium, size not to exceed 6' or 180 cm in any direction. Sculpture must be able to be lifted and moved by 2 people.  Closing date for entries is Monday, 6 September.

Art Walk, Saturday, 4 September - Sunday, 19 September: Artists are invited to submit work for a town arts trail - work will be located in a variety of retail and business outlets along Brackley High Street.
Closing date for entries is Monday, 23 August.

Art Market, Sunday, 19 September: Artists are invited to trade in either of two areas: the Piazza in front of Brackley Town Hall or in the Market House Courtyard, opposite the Piazza (and next to Rowans Gallery). Both areas will be covered but you will need to bring along your own table(s) and chair(s). All work sold must be made by the trader.Closing date for entries is Friday, 3 September.

Demonstrations / Taster Sessions, Sunday, 19 September: Artists are invited to take the opportunity to promote their work by either giving a demonstration and/or taster session. These will be located in Brackley Town Hall.  Closing date for entries is Monday, 23 August.

Space for longer exhibition periods during the festival fortnight: there are a few additional spaces located around Brackley Town Centre which are available for hire for longer periods; interested artists should email stating which dates they require.

Darcy Woods holds her first solo exhibition in Madcap this month (12th-31st August) and her sponsors Just Shoot Me Photography and Shutterflies are holding 2 free photo shoot days, where any print sales 10% will go towards madcap and 10% towards Willen Hospice!

Darcy's work is self portrait fine art photography. It is inspired by a number of things, from dreams to the media.

"Darcy's Work is so different from what art you see around! Her self portraits aren't self indulged and vain like other female self portrait artists. She shows you what she sees; whether it's a childish giggle about cheap flights (Image of Darcy hanging of an aeroplane wing, False Economy) or a serious statement on the media ("Nothing Tastes As Good as the Feeling of Being Thin" Kate Moss, a rather skinny body with a comical bite). It's a real mix of work and not one to miss this year!" Ally Cope

The dates for the photo shoots are: Wednesday 18th August (10am-12pm) and Friday 27th August (12pm-6pm)
